SUMMER COFFEEHOUSE SERIES

OPEN MIC POETRY READING

MUSIC 7:30 pm; READINGS 8:15 pm
Join amateur and professional poets alike as Callanwolde celebrates the art and performance of poetry with its Summer Coffeehouse Series and Open Mic Poetry Readings. Held in the unique setting of the Callanwolde Conservatory, the evening begins at 7:30 with a compelling musical performance by poet, songwriter and musician Kodac Harrison. Winner of Creative Loafing’s “Best Spoken Word Artist” award, Harrison combines character studies and tales of travel with his bluesy, folk-soul music. Then at 8:15, the open mic readings are open to all poets who would like to read their original poetry. The first ten poets to call and sign up at 404-872-5338 ext. 228 will have the opportunity to read for 5 minutes. $5 General Admission, $3 Students with ID, Seniors, and Members. JAZZ CONCERT SERIES – JAZZ ON THE LAWN

“Best of Atlanta” Award-winning Jazz Venue, Callanwolde’s Jazz on the Lawn series presents special outdoor concerts featuring the best of local jazz musicians. Including a mix of classic and contemporary jazz, swing, blues, reggae, be-bop and R&B, this popular concert series is sure to excite audiences with its high-energy performances. Audiences enjoy the relaxing natural beauty of Callanwolde’s lush grounds as the finest jazz artists in the Southeast perform under the stars. As the sun goes down, the music turns up. Jazz on the Lawn continues throughout the summer as Callanwolde hosts an array of brilliant jazz artists.

A favorite at Callanwolde, enjoy Will Scruggs’ swinging saxophone skills and energetic sounds for an unforgettable musical experience. Scruggs leads a fellowship of professional musicians and is accompanied by powerful vocalist Audrey Shakir, one of Atlanta’s greatest musical treasures in the world of jazz singing. Whether conversing in scat riffs and sax runs or singing a duet, the joy of music is palpable when these two friends get together. Guests are invited to bring lawn chairs or a blanket and a picnic and enjoy these special concerts under the stars. In case of rain, the concert will be moved to Callanwolde’s indoor Courtyard.

DIVAS, DAMES AND DAMSELS

The Women’s Imaginative Guild of Storytellers (WIGS) presents Divas, Dames and Damsels, the 6th annual Day of Discovery for Women. Bring friends, collaborate and enjoy this day of rich stories, light refreshments, music and door prizes, all in the beautiful setting of Callanwolde Fine Arts Center. You don’t want to miss this summer event’s fun and celebration. Tickets: $15 per person; $135 per table of 10. Reservations are recommended. TANGO NIGHT with TANGO-RIO!

Learn to appreciate authentic Argentine tango! You will learn about the rhythm and movement of Argentine Tango and how to focus on connecting with the music and your partner. Learn how two bodies can move as one! Dancers of all skill levels are welcome and no partner is necessary. The evening begins at 8:00 pm with an introductory lesson from the expert instructors of Tango Rio (www.tango-rio.com). After the introductory lesson, you will be ready to try out your new moves with an open tango dance party, beginning at 9:15 pm. $15 Lesson & Party/$10 Party Only.
