Georgia DOT updates work on the widening project underway on US 129 from the Jefferson Bypass to State Route 330 in Jackson County.
“We were planning to shift traffic on US 129 today but weather permit. The pavement is still wet from the overnight rains and we can’t stripe the roadway when it is wet. The striping just won’t stick so we have rescheduled the traffic change for tomorrow. Traffic will be routed over to the lanes that will eventually be the two southbound lanes. For now, only one lane will be for southbound traffic  from the Jefferson Bypass to State Route 330. One lane will be for northbound traffic. Northbound traffic will be routed over one half mile north of Terry Farms Road to the Jefferson Bypass just north of Anglin road. By moving all the traffic over onto the newly constructed lanes, we can work on the lanes that will be the northbound only lanes. Please slow down and pay attention as changes will occur almost daily as we approach the end of this project. We appreciate your patience throughout construction. We look forward to getting out of your way and opening all four lanes of this project this summer,” DOT District Engineer Russell McMurry said.
The completion date for this project is June 30, 2008 and its construction cost is over $21 million.
Georgia DOT urges travelers to call 511 for updated information about this or any other construction project on interstates and state routes. Georgia 511 is a free phone service that provides real-time traffic and travel information statewide, such as traffic conditions, incidents, lane closures, and delays due to inclement weather. Callers also can transfer to operators to request assistance or report incidents 24 hours a day, seven days a week. More information is available at www.511ga.org.
