Georgia Department of Transportation Commissioner Gena Abraham today announced $75 million was awarded in March for a local gateway project in Richmond County and other resurfacing and safety improvement projects throughout Georgia. In FY 08 total awards have exceeded $525 million.

                “The gateway project will improve mobility over the railroad and canal into the Augusta Medical Center Complex,” said Commissioner Abraham. “While some might consider roadway resurfacing to be more routine maintenance in comparison to the complexity of the Augusta work, these combined projects are critical to maintaining Georgia’s overall transportation network.”

The March awards include a $30.3 million contract for extending and re-grading two local roads and construction of six new bridges near the Augusta Medical Center to allow for better access into the complex. Additionally Georgia DOT awarded 19 contracts totaling a combined $33.3 million for resurfacing and shoulder reconstruction on state roads and interstates.

Georgia DOT maintains 18,000 state highways and interstates miles or 15.5 percent of the 116,000 miles of public roads in Georgia. These state highways and interstates carry 63 percent of the total vehicle miles travelled statewide.  Due to the dedication of Georgia DOT employees, Georgia’s highways have consistently been rated among the nation’s best maintained highways.
