On June 9, 2008 around 0111 hours, Officers responded to the Lanier Terrace Apartment complex parking lot for a report that a cab driver for El Palmar Taxi had just been robbed at gunpoint.  Upon arrival an officer located the female cab driver sitting in her cab emotionally distraught and overwhelmed by fear.  She was able to give a direction and partial description of the male that put a pistol to her head and demanded her money, then fled on foot.  Another cab driver with the same company spotted the suspect around Downey Boulevard and relayed his location.  A patron in that cab kept the suspect from fleeing the area by tackling him until an officer arrived within moments and took the suspect into custody without incident.  The pistol used and a sum of cash taken during the robbery was recovered from the suspect.  The cab patron that helped was commended for his brave actions, but warned of the danger he placed himself in.  The female cab driver did not receive any physical injuries and required no medical treatment at the scene.
The Gainesville Police Department discourages civilians from confronting armed suspects due to the potential risks involved; fortunately this incident had a positive outcome.
