For the last couple of months our staff has been busy preparing the budget for 2008-2009. The Finance Department presented a General Fund Budget of $28 million, a three percent decrease from the current budget. As we consider what is best for our residents our greatest challenge is keeping costs down in the midst of rising fuel prices and health insurance. The final budget will be presented to Council during two public hearings in June with a final vote expected June 17.
May 4 has been declared Community Superheroes Day in Gainesville. The City of Gainesville and the Interactive Neighborhood for Kids will team up for a special event to recognize heroes of all ages. Gainesville police officers and firefighters will serve lunch from 1:00pm-2:00pm. Children who dress as their favorite superhero will be admitted to INK for $5. May is older Americans Month. Special events are planned at the Gainesville Hall County Senior Life Center with the help of the Lions Club and the Newcomers Club. May is also National Drinking Water Month. The Gainesville Public Utilities Department will host a Customer Appreciation Day luncheon, Friday, May 9 from 11:00am-2:00pm at their office on Queen City Parkway. On Thursday, May 29 we will officially open Gainesville’s state of the art Linwood Water Reclamation Facility. The celebration will begin at 11:30am at the plant located at the end of Linwood Drive.
