POETRY READING

Join two amazing poets Kevin Cantwell and Seaborn Jones as Callanwolde celebrates the art and performance of poetry with readings each month in the unique setting of the Callanwolde Conservatory. Kevin Cantwell has a Ph.D. in English from the University of Utah where he served as Co-editor of Quarterly West, and currently teaches English at Macon State College. His reviews of poetry have appeared widely, and his poems have been published in many magazines including Paris Review, The New Republic, Shenandoah, Ninth Letter and 32 Poems. He has won the Academy of American Poets Prize and has been a finalist for the Walt Whitman Award twice. In 2002 New Issues Press published his first book, Something Black in the Green Part of Your Eye, and he has a forthcoming chapbook, The Last Supper Club.

Seaborn Jones is the author of two books of poetry, Drowning from the Inside Out and Lost Keys as well as three chapbooks, Black Champagne, X-Ray Movies, which received the Georgia Author of the Year Award in Poetry, and most recently Getaway Car in Reverse. His poems have appeared in Southern Poetry Review, Pearl, Rockhurst Review, River Styx, Louisiana Review and elsewhere. He has received two awards from the Georgia Arts Council and a scholarship to the Bread Loaf Writers Conference. A native of Macon, Georgia, he now lives in nearby Lizella.

FAMILY STORYTELLING: EMERGING VOICES
Celebrate the power of storytelling each month as Callanwolde showcases the Atlanta area's best stories, storytellers and storytelling traditions. Led by series coordinator Bev Center, audiences will enjoy a diverse group of professional and student storytellers as they entertain audiences with tales for all ages. September features the Hinds Family of Storytellers: Jane, Dudley and their granddaughter Rachel. Jane Hinds has been telling wonderful, enchanting stories for about 20 years at The Carter Center, Southern Order of Storytellers Winter Festival, Wesley Woods Senior Center and various schools, churches, and libraries. Dudley Hinds is a retired Urban Planner. For 20 years he taught Real Estate and Urban Planning at Georgia State University, and recently became a storyteller. Trains and locomotives are his current storytelling interest. Rachel Hernandes is 9 years old and has been telling stories for several years. She especially loves to dress in a traditional Pakistani dress and tell stories from India, where her other grandparents grew up. $3 General Admission, $1 Children. GALLERY: OPENING NIGHT RECEPTION
”BREATH OF BAMBOO”:
PHOTOGRAPHS BY BROOK REYNOLDS
The exhibit will open on Friday, September 19, with a reception for the artist from 7 to 9 pm, and run through October 31. Admission is free and the public is invited.

“Breath of Bamboo” is a selection of color photographs from a two-year exploration of the southeastern landscape. The poetic images are inspired by the study and practice of Zen Buddhism and are intended to raise awareness of the ecological and spiritual significance of bamboo. This exhibit is in conjunction with the annual citywide event, “Atlanta Celebrates Photography”.

The gallery is located on the second floor of the main building in the Callanwolde mansion at 980 Briarcliff Road, Atlanta. Viewing hours are from 10 am to 8 pm, Monday through Friday, and 10 am to 3 pm on Saturday. For more information call 404-872-5338.

Learn to appreciate authentic Argentine tango! You will learn about the rhythm and movement of Argentine Tango and how to focus on connecting with the music and your partner. Learn how two bodies can move as one! Dancers of all skill levels are welcome and no partner is necessary. The evening begins at 8:00 pm with an introductory lesson from the expert instructors of Tango Rio (www.tango-rio.com). After the introductory lesson, you will be ready to try out your new moves with an open tango dance party, beginning at 9:15 pm. $15 Lesson & Party/$10 Party Only. Join two amazing poets Karen Head and Collin Kelley as Callanwolde celebrates the art and performance of poetry with readings in the unique setting of the Callanwolde Conservatory.

Karen Head, an Atlanta native, is the author of Shadow Boxes, My Paris Year, winner of the 2008 All Nations Press’s Editors’ Choice for Excellence in Poetry Award and Sassing, forthcoming in 2009. Her poetry has appeared in many journals, including Prairie Schooner, Southern Humanities Review, Cortland Review and Chattahoochee Review. She is the Graduate Communications Coordinator and Special Advisor to the Writing and Communication Program at Georgia Tech. www.karenhead.blogspot.com.

READING: JUNE AKERS SEESE

June Akers Seese will be reading from her forthcoming novel, “Whose Coffee Is It?”, in the Library of the mansion at Callanwolde Fine Arts Center. June will be joined by New York- based novelist Thaddeus Rutkowski. Writing about the blood and mystery under life's surfaces puts them in the current of some of the best writing being done today. This is fiction that is lean, somewhat tight-lipped, unflashy, and careful. It's built on suggestion, not statement; and the sentences have been compared to bullets. Join us for festive feastings and dancing in disguise in the mansion and gardens at Callanwolde. This year's fundraiser will be the most memorable party of the season. Hosted in Callanwolde's historic mansion and lush gardens, live music by the popular Gwen Hughes and the Retro Jazz Kats and catering by Atlanta's cuisine experts Affairs to Remember, will enhance this special evening of fun. This will be your first chance to preview Callanwolde’s restoration of the gardens and Pool House. All proceeds will benefit the arts and education programs of Callanwolde Fine Arts Center. An exciting afternoon of varied classical music! Callanwolde Fine Arts Center showcases the highly acclaimed vocal power of countertenor Parker Burton III, with one performance only, in the Great Hall. Mr. Burton’s voice holds exceptional range and power, and the beautiful architectural setting of the Callanwolde mansion enhances the richness of his unique sound.

Mr. Burton’s opera roles and recitals include performances with New Jersey Concert Opera, New York Chamber Opera, Harlem Opera Theatre, Americolor Opera Alliance and many others. Audiences will enjoy a classical selection of music from various genres.

DANCE PERFORMANCE: "THE NUTCRACKER"
The holiday season is not complete without attending a performance of Tchaikovsky's "The Nutcracker". Join the Callanwolde Dance Ensemble as they present three performances of excerpts from the holiday ballet classic. Performance will be held at St. Pius Catholic School.

Willis of Americolor Opera. The show is a family-oriented performance based upon the journey of the Three Kings to the manger. The light-hearted operetta consists of five mini-acts and features Parker Burton, III from New York, whose voice of exceptional range and power offers a rare countertenor performance.
