Join the Atlanta TeamHOPE 5K Walk Nov. 11, 2007 at Grant Park

Published Nov 8, 2007

Visuals include walkers registering, walkers in action, balloons, Rememberance Wall decorated with photos of and messages about Metro Atlantans and others who have died of pancreatic cancer.

Interview opportunities include Brittany Black, Atlanta TeamHope coordinator, other volunteers, walkers, pancreatic cancer survivors.

Speakers will include Atlanta businessman and pancreatic cancer survivor Howard Young, an Atlanta TeamHOPE member who is funding a University of Georgia pancreatic cancer research project; and Dr. David A. Kooby, Assistant Professor of Surgery, Division of Surgical Oncology, Emory University and the Atlanta Veterans Medical Center.

WHO:

Atlanta TeamHOPE the all-volunteer local affiliate of the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network -- and at least 340 walkers of all ages, including at least 12 pancreatic cancer survivors.

WHAT:

The Second Annual Atlanta TeamHOPE Walk to raise money for the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network's research, education and advocacy work.

WHEN:

Sunday, November 11, 2007. On-site registration begins at noon, followed by a opening ceremony at 1:45 p.m. and the walk at 2 p.m. Registration before the event is $20; registration the day of the event is $25. Virtual walkers who can’t attend the event can participate for $15. Pancreatic cancer survivors and children younger than 12 participate free.

WHERE:

Grant Park, Atlanta. Free parking is available in lots at Grant Park that are accessible from Boulevard and from Cherokee Avenue. Parking is also available on streets bordering the park. How to get to the park: http://gpconservancy.org/node/53

WHY:

Pancreatic cancer is the fourth leading cancer killer in the United States. There is no early detection method for this disease -- nothing like the mammogram or other tests that can catch other forms of cancer at early stages.

Despite this glaring need, pancreatic cancer research is allocated just one percent of the National Cancer Institute's cancer research budget.

Money raised through the 5K walk, which is organized exclusively by metro Atlanta volunteers, will be used to expand the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network’s research grants, as well as patient programs, advocacy and educational initiatives and awareness programs for the lay and medical communities.
