The Kaiser Permanente Corporate Run/Walk & Fitness Program is just days away from a spectacular anniversary celebration that includes a fitness expo, live entertainment and a spectacular fireworks display. Celebrating its 25th consecutive year this September, the 5K corporate fitness program employs a unique eight-week workplace fitness initiative -- Get Active Atlanta -- designed to promote healthy lifestyles for Atlanta companies and their employees. The 2007 Kaiser Permanente Corporate Run/Walk steps off at 7 p.m. on Thursday, September 27, 2007 in downtown Atlanta, adjacent to Turner Field.
Says Jeff Galloway, founder and race director, “As part of the KPCRW package, companies throughout metro-Atlanta participating in this year’s event began an optional eight-week training program in August. This training for almost 18,000 runners and walkers culminates on Thursday, September 27, 2007 when participants lace up their running shoes for the 25th Kaiser Permanente Corporate Run/Walk and pound the pavement along a 3.1 mile course through the streets of downtown Atlanta.”
“This is truly the only workplace-organized fitness program of its kind in Atlanta, and it’s become an annual rite of passage for Atlanta’s business community,” said Galloway. “From the weekly training tips and encouragement from team captains to the free eight-week membership at Bally Total Fitness, this program is designed for all fitness levels and unparalleled in its approach to helping Atlanta’s business community get fit and stay fit,” he continued.
The Kaiser Permanente Corporate Run/Walk & Fitness Program is open to everyone, regardless of fitness level. The program debuted in Atlanta by Galloway -- a U.S. Olympian, marathon expert and author -- in 1983 and included 900 participants from dozens of Atlanta corporations. Today, the event attracts close to 18,000 participants from 400-plus Atlanta companies and ranks as one of the largest self-standing corporate organized fitness programs in the nation.
The Chamber Fitness Challenge is back for year number-two, as Atlanta Chambers challenge one another by garnering the most participation. Those who have accepted the Challenge include: Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce, Atlanta Metropolitan Black Chamber of Commerce, Greater North Fulton Chamber of Commerce, South Fulton Chamber of Commerce, Cumming-Forsyth County Chamber of Commerce and DeKalb Chamber of Commerce.
Participating companies designate a team captain who coordinates and motivates his/her fellow team members throughout the training period. Large, small and mid-sized companies – and self-employed individuals -- may enter an unlimited number of runners or walkers as part of their team. Teams may also include part-time employees, family members, friends and children. Registration is now $25 per person. And it’s not too late to register. Call (404) 843-8727 or visit www.KPcorporaterunwalk.com.
Awards are distributed for best times, best team times, most participation, team spirit, best T-shirt, top male/female finishers and fastest male/female CEOs. The Kaiser Permanente ® Cup is presented to Atlanta’s “most fit” companies in categories judged by the Worksite Workgroup of the Georgia Nutrition and Physical Activity Initiative. This initiative is a joint effort between the Division of Public Health and its public, private and non-profit partners, to prevent obesity and other chronic diseases through healthy eating and physical activity initiatives across the life span.
And this year, coinciding with the 25th Anniversary festivities, the Atlanta Drum Line will perform and a spectacular fireworks display will cap off the evening. A portion of the proceeds benefits the Atlanta Braves Foundation and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Atlanta.
Sponsors include Kaiser Permanente of Georgia, Clear Channel; WSB-TV2 Family2Family; The Atlanta Journal-Constitution; Atlanta Sports & Fitness/Georgia Athlete; Jezebel; 680 The Fan, DAVE FM and Phidippides.
