FEBRUARY 2008 FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 8; 7:00 pm GALLERY: OPENING NIGHT RECEPTION “Family Stories and Others” An Exhibit of Mixed Media Works by Carla House The exhibit will open on Friday, February 8, with a reception for the artist from 7 to 9 pm, and run through March 28. Admission is free and the public is invited. “My series began years ago as an exercise in retrieving childhood memories and recording dreams and reflections,” says the artist. “The work combines watercolor and collage techniques and employs the use of symbolism and metaphors to weave the stories together.” The gallery is located on the second floor of the main building in the Callanwolde mansion at 980 Briarcliff Road, Atlanta. FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 8; 7:00 pm FAMILY STORYTELLING: EMERGING VOICES Celebrate the power of storytelling each month as Callanwolde showcases the Atlanta area's best stories, storytellers and storytelling traditions. Led by series coordinator Bev Center, Emerging Voices features the Kuumba Storytellers of Georgia during Black History Month. This exciting show will include professional storytellers Esther Culver and Ernestine Brown, as well as student storytellers, who will entertain audiences of all ages with stories from historical African and African American traditions. $3 General Admission, $1 Children. SATURDAY & SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 9 & 10 FEBRUARY 9 at 8 pm; FEBRUARY 10 at 3 pm and 8 pm "FRANKLIN" One-Man Show Callanwolde presents Marty Barrett's one-man theatrical portrayal of Benjamin Franklin. FRANKLIN is a fascinating 90-minute play, perfect for history buffs and theatre fans. Experience the humor, power, and inspiration of the ultimate American mind, live on stage! Written, directed, and performed by Marty Barrett, whose extensive research tells the story of Benjamin Franklin's life and times starting as a young man and includes the full breadth of Franklin's style, politics, and inventive spirit. Marty Barrett has worked as an actor, writer, and director in Atlanta for 30 years, including 20 years with Young Audiences at Woodruff Art Center, and he also teaches acting classes at Callanwolde. WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 13; 8:15 pm POETRY READING Join two amazing poets Judson Mitcham and Lisa Allender as Callanwolde celebrates the art and performance of poetry with readings in the unique setting of the Callanwolde Conservatory. Judson Mitcham will read from his new book, “A Little Salvation: Poems Old and New”. $5 General Admission, $3 Students with ID, Seniors, and Members. You will learn about the rhythm and movement of Argentine Tango and how to focus on connecting with the music and your partner. Learn how two bodies can move as one! Dancers of all skill levels are welcome and no partner is necessary. The evening begins at 8:00 pm with an introductory lesson from the expert instructors of Tango Rio (www.tango-rio.com). SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 24; 3 pm DANCE: Several Dancers Core Presents “Arias from Messiah” Several Dancers Core has initiated an artistic collaboration between its dance company, CORE Performance Company, and Atlanta Baroque Orchestra to present “Arias from Messiah”. The dance enlivens the beauty of select arias from George Frideric Handel’s masterwork Messiah, adding color, movement, and meaning to an already rich text and score. The historic Great Hall of Callanwolde will create a beautiful backdrop for this intimate performance. Tickets: $25 general; $20 senior/student. FEBRUARY 29; 7:30-11 pm SILENT AUCTION: “GIVING GALA” The Junior League of DeKalb County will host "Giving Gala", a silent and live auction. All proceeds from the auction will support the Junior League of DeKalb's "A Space of My Own" project, which provides comforters and bedding to children living in community shelters and foster homes in DeKalb County. The "Giving Gala" event will be held in the elegant setting of Callanwolde and will feature a raffle, open bar, great food, and entertainment for all. Tickets: $25. This "soiree" event aims to provide exposure to a wide variety of chamber music literature, to stimulate sensitive ensemble playing, and to create awareness of the elements of fine musicianship through sight-reading, listening, and performing. Dan Veach, editor and publisher of “Atlanta Review” has had poems published internationally and has given solo recitals at Oxford University and the Poetry Society in England. His chapbook "My Long Thigh Bone" was published by Poetry Atlanta Press. Turner Cassity, the author of ten collections of poetry, has had poems appear in “The Formalist”, “Yale Review”, “POETRY Magazine” and elsewhere.
