Every gardener knows that the key to a successful growing season is water, water, and more water. But with droughts and shortages hitting parts of the U.S, keeping your flowers in bloom and your veggie patch healthy can be a pricey proposition.
There’s a simple insurance policy against drought right above your head; a 1,000 square foot roof in an area that receives as little as 20 inches of rain annually can shed 12,000 gallons of fresh, low in salt and chlorine—and most importantly, free—water each year. This is wonderful news not only for your pocketbook but also for the environment, considering less than 1% of the world’s fresh water supply is readily accessible for human use.
The Fiskars Rainwater Collection System can help you access some of that tidal wave for use in your yard and garden. Designed to easily integrate into your home’s existing downspouts, the Collection System diverts rainwater from the gutters into a covered barrel (a variety of sizes and styles available – depending on location) where the extra water is stored and can be used later to perk up your tomatoes or freshen your rose bushes. This collected rainwater is naturally low in salt and chlorine and is great for watering not only outdoor plants, but indoor plants as well.
The Rainwater Collection System includes a rain barrel, cover, base stand, and spigot assembly as well as two diverters designed to fit the two most common gutter dimensions. After installation, it takes as little as two-tenths of an inch of rain on a typical roof to completely fill the Collection System. When the barrel has filled, the diverter conveniently allows excess rainwater to continue through the downspout and away from your home – protecting your home’s foundation.
Add more than one Rainwater Collection System to your home and you can ensure the plants you’ve worked so hard to grow will successfully weather any water restrictions or drought. Most importantly, you can feel good knowing you are doing your part to conserve this dwindling natural resource that you—and your garden—so greatly depend on.
